Jesus instructed in Luke 24:49 “And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” Jesus didn’t mean for this to be an exercise but an experience that would enable the recipients of His power to live a victorious, overcoming life. They were to be infused with power from on high.

Are we any different today than they were at the ascension of Jesus? I think not. You need not look far before you find the enemy attacking everything God calls holy. The scriptures are violated by those who were taught better but have chosen to take the easier road of acceptability and tolerance.

We must be people of the Spirit; Spirit filled and Spirit led. We must follow the example of Jesus. At the Lord’s water baptism the Spirit came and sat upon Him as a dove. The next scene is the Holy Spirit leading Jesus into the wilderness to fast and pray for forty days and thereafter be tempted by the devil (Lu. 4:1-13), followed by, “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about.” (vs.14) If Jesus needed the power of the Spirit, what makes us think we can survive and do the will of God without the same infilling and empowerment?

Jesus needed the Spirit baptism to preach the word; “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel….” (Lu. 4:18) This is followed by verses 31 and 32 “And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days, and they were astonished at His doctrine: for His word was with power.”

The Holy Spirit is our teacher. John 14: 26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” The disciples who had followed Jesus were not well versed in scripture until after the Holy Spirit filled them. We can rely upon the Holy Spirit to make His word real to us.

The Holy Spirit causes us to bear fruit. Galatians 5:22, 23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is not law.” Everything we are incapable of, the Holy Spirit is able to plant and cultivate in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is a gift giver. I Corinthians 12: 1, 7-11 “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues; but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” The church service has access to these gifts through the obedience of the believer, “How is it brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying." I Corinthians 14: 26

As the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus for service, so does He in our lives. The anointing of God comes through the power of the Spirit. The conviction and reproof of sin comes through the Holy Spirit moving upon the hearts of the offender as we speak His truth.

Finally, the Holy Spirit is our guide. John16: 13 “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth is come, He shall guide you into all truth.” Romans 8: 14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

The church must return to the Spirit-led, Spirit empowered posture our forefathers exampled to us. We must be PEOPLE OF THE SPIRIT!
